Brandreth double helps Colwyn Bay beat Llandudno
Posted by Tim Channon on July 29, 2008 10:06 PM
TWO goals from Tim Brandreth helped Colwyn Bay beat Llandudno 3-1 in a pre-season friendly at Llanelian Road on Tuesday night (July 29).
But Llandudno more than held their own for much of the game and it was only when Colwyn Bay introduced first choice strikers Dean Canning and Rob Hopley from the bench in the second half that they took control of the game.
Even Seagulls manager Steve Pope admitted Llandudno were the better side in the first half with Alun Roberts testing Farai Jackson with a well struck shot and Jason Sadler very unlucky not to give his side the lead with an acrobatic volley which went inches wide of the post from an Alun Roberts cross.
It was 35 minutes before Llandudno keeper Shaun Pearson had a save to make, turning a Tim Brandreth shot onto the post and away for corner, but Colwyn Bay took the lead three minutes before the break when Jamie MacKintosh's angled shot on the turn took a slight deflection and went in off the far post.
Llandudno equalised eight minutes into the second half with a sharp finish by Jason Sadler, his fifth goal in three games, after taking a return pass form Caerwyn Roberts.
Colwyn Bay then introduced Hopley and Canning and they had an immediate impact, while Llandudno suffered a double injury blow losing central defender Craig Hogg (ankle) and Gwyn Peters (hamstring).
Tim Brandreth, moving up to support the attack, put the Bay back in front with a heander from a Danny Hughes cross, and although Sadler and Caerwyn Roberts both went close to getting a second Llandudno equaliser, Colwyn Bay dominated the last 10 minutes with Hopley going close with two headers from Dean Canning crosses, before Colwyn Bay got their third goal two minutes from the end.
Llandudno failed to clear from a corner and when the ball was played back in, Tim Brandreth brought it down neatly before slotting past Pearson.
Pope disappointed after Colwyn Bay defeat
Posted by Tim Channon on July 26, 2008 6:07 PM
COLWYN BAY manager Steve Pope described himself as "very disappointed" with his side's performance after they lost 2-0 at home to Wrexham in front of a crowd of nearly 700 on Saturday (July 26).
Wrexham won with two first half goals and it was only in the last five minutes that Colwyn Bay created anything in front of goal.
"I was very disappointed with our performance, " said the manager. "I don't know if we were overawed or what, but we didn't seem to want the ball and we didn't do any of the things we did well the other night against Tranmere.
"We were better in the second half when Wrexham couldn't get through us and we also created two very good chances late in the game when Dean Canning and Rob Hopley should have scored, but overall we have to do much better than that."
Colwyn Bay started brightly with some good attacking play in the opening five minutes, but Wrexham closed players down very quickly in midfield, giving Colwyn Bay no time on the ball and forcing a number of errors and free kicks.
Carl Tremarco put Wrexham in front after 23 minutes with a well struck free kick on the edge of the area and when Colwyn Bay gave the ball away at the back four minutes later, Shaun Whalley broke clear to pick his spot past Matt Parry.
Wrexham seemed to take their foot off the pedal in the second half, but always looked in control as Colwyn Bay struggled to string passes together.
It was only in the last five minutes that the Seagulls created a real goalscoring opportunity when Dean Canning broke clear on the left but put his angled shot wide of the far post, and then Wrexham keeper Gavin Ward made a good save to turn Rob Hopley's close range shot for a corner.
Wrexham manager Brian Little said Colwyn Bay and provided a "physical challenge" to his side, but he always felt they had the game under control.
"I would have liked us to have kicked on in the second half and scored more goals, but when you have the game won at half-time it is easy for players to switch off a bit," he said afterwards.
Steve Pope said he would be playing a different side against Llandudno on Tuesday (July 29), starting with players who did not get a game against Wrexham.

Another win for Llandudno

NEW signing Jason Sadler scored his fourth goal in two games as Llandudno beat Blaenau Ffestiniog 2-0 in a pre-season friendly at Maesdu Park on Thursday (July 24).
Dean Hughes got their other goal.
That's two wins out of two for Llandudno in which they've scored six goals and conceded none and their next match is away to Colwyn Bay next Tuesday (July 29, 7.30pm).
Fine win for Colwyn Bay against Tranmere
Posted by Tim Channon on July 23, 2008 9:30 PM
COLWYN BAY produced their best pre-season performance so far to win 3-1 against a youthful Tranmere Rovers side that was bolstered by four senior squad players, including recent signing Luke Waterfall from Barnsley.
Much of the play in the first half was played between the two penalty boxes with neither keeper tested, but Colwyn Bay took the lead a minute before half-time when Dean Canning sent a looping header over keeper Joe Collister from a Matty Wood cross.
The Seagulls then added two more goals in the space of five minutes early in the second half.
Canning's through ball put Rob Hopley clear to volley over the advancing keeper on 58 minutes and when Robbie Williams was brought down on the edge of the area, Steve Aspinall rifled the free kick through the defensive wall and into the corner of the net.
Despite making eight changes, Colwyn Bay continued to create all the chances with Matt Hoult, Dave Hughes, Aspinall and Luke O'Mahoney all going close before Tranmere got a late consolation goal through Tom Baker eight minutes from the end.
The Bay also defended well to keep out a free kick six yards from goal in the last minute after substitute keepr Farai Jackson was forced to handle a wayward backpass that was dropping over his head.
Colwyn Bay played some good football at pace and outplayed their full-time opponents for much of the second half.
The perfommnce should ensure a good crowd for Saturday's home game against Wrexham (2pm).
The disappointing news, however, is unconfirmed reports that central defender John Davies, who has impressed in the previous games, is returning to Airbus UK after being offered more money.
Colwyn Bay draw with Cefn Druids
Posted by Tim Channon on July 19, 2008 6:35 PM
ROBBIE WILLIAMS scored a second half equaliser to give Colwyn Bay a 1-1 draw against Cefn Druids at Llanelian Road.
The Welsh Premier side started the stronger and Nicky Ward capitalised on a misunderstanding between Neil Coverley and keeper Matt Parry to give them a 17th minute lead.
Colwyn Bay gradually settled into their game and Dean Canning had a shot cleared off the line before half-time. then after dominating much of the play in the second half, they deservedly equalised when Robbie Williams scored withg a well taken goal from 20 yards out.
Substitute keeper Farai Jackson saved well at the feet of Ward to keep the sides on level terms and Rob Hopley missed a great chance to win it for the Bay in the last 10 minutes when he miskicked in front of goal from a Dave Hughes cross.
Sadler signs after hat-trick for Llandudno
Posted by Tim Channon on July 19, 2008 6:14 PM
LLANDUDNO have completed the signing of former Caernarfon and Llangefni striker Jason Sadler after he scored a hat-trick in the Maesdu Park side's 4-0 demolition of Welsh Premier side Porthmadog on Saturday (July 19).
Joint manager Grant Montgomery described it as "a fantastic signing for the club" and he will have taken great heart from his side's comprehensive win.
"I don't think the scoreline flattered us. We were more confident on the ball and I was delighted with our fitness levels," added Montgomery.
Sadler broke clear to take the ball round Porthmadog keeper Richard Harvey to put Llandudno 1-0 up at half-time and after Alun Roberts had added a second goal 67 minutes with a right foot volley, Sadler completed his hat-trick with two more goals in the last 20 minutes.
New signings Craig Hogg and Caerwyn Roberts both did well on their debuts, but Chris Boulton missed the game after being ill overnight.

The tourists scored 155 and then bowled England out for 122, with eight balls still remaining, despite knocks of 23 and 22 by Darrell Sykes and Mike O'Mahoney.
Australian's man of the match was Luke Trudgett who scored 33 not out off 30 balls with the bat and then took 3 for 24 off four overs with the ball.

Australia retain Deaf Ashes

AUSTRALIA retained the Deaf Ashes when the second cricket Test against England at Colwyn Bay ended in a draw.
England were left to chase an improbable 404 for victory in their seocnd innings on the final day (Tuesday) after two centuries from Australia's Andrew Watkins, and finished on 148 for seven with Mike O'Mahoney, who hit a century in the first innings, again top scoring with 47.
The teams teams meet again in a Twenty20 game at Colwyn Bay on Thursday (July 17) starting at 5pm.
Colwyn Bay win at Rhyl
Posted by Tim Channon on July 15, 2008 10:30 PM
COLWYN BAY produced an encouraging second half perfomance to win 1-0 at Rhyl in their second pre-season friendly on Tuesday night (July 15).
Rhyl played their big new signings Carl Owen, Neil Roberts and Jamie Reid in the first half, with first choice keeper Lee Kendall in goal throughout, and they opened up the Bay defence three or four times in the opening 15 minutes without being able to finish.
Farai Jackson was much the busier keeper without ever being really extended, but Colwyn Bay became more solid at the back as the game progressed and in the second half began to show some real belief in attack and played the ball around quite well at times.
The only goal of the game came on 75 minutes after Robbie Williams had been denied by a diving save from Kendall following good play by Dean Canning.
Rhyl failed to clear the resulting corner and when Tim Brandreth played the ball back in, John Davies stabbed the ball past Kendall for the winner.
Colwyn Bay beaten by TNS
Posted by Tim Channon on July 11, 2008 10:42 PM
COLWYN BAY were beaten 4-1 at home by The New Saints on Friday night, after holding their own for an hour.
With a number of players unavailable, including Rob Hopley, Lewis Callaghan and Paul Roberts, Colwyn did well in the first half with Dean Canning proving a handful for the Welsh Prenmier side's defence.
He was pulled down from behind when breaking clear on goal in the opening 10 minutes and although Colwyn Bay played on and got the ball in the net, the referee had already blown for the foul.
The Seagulls forced four corners to one, and were unlucky when TNS keeper Andy Mulliner palmed the ball against a post, but the visitors led 1-0 at half-time with Craig Whitfield getting in front of Neil Coverley to divert a right wing cross past Matt Parry.
Parry had earlier saved well at Whitfield's feet but did not have that much to do with John Davies taking the eye at the back for Colwyn Bay alongside the dependable Tim Brandreth.
The New Saints got a second goal just before the hour through Steve Beck following a break down the right and with Colwyn Bay making eight changes in the second half to give a number of trialists a go, it was inevitable that they became less affective.
Scott Roscoe got a third goal for TNS with a deflected shot that wrong-footed Matt Parry, and although Colwyn Bay pulled one back with a cross from Dave Hughes that dropped over keeper Andy Mulliner into the far corner of the net, TNS got a fourth goal 10 minutes from the end with a header by Alex Darlington after Colwyn Bay had given the ball away on the edge of their own area.
The Bay management team of Steve Pope and Paul Ogden will have taken some pluses from their side's first competitive game against a full-time side whose preparations are far in advance of Colwyn Bay, but there is clearly much work to be done in the coming weeks before the start of the league campaign.
