Woosnam pipped for Conwy crown

Posted by Tim Channon on June 15, 2008 5:30 PM

IAN WOOSNAM just failed to make it a triumphant homecoming when he had to settle for second place in the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open at Conwy on Sunday (June 15).
He was beaten by two shots by Englishman Peter Mitchell, but had chances to get on level terms in the closing stages.
He missed a short birdie putt at the 12th which would have put him level with Mitchell at that stage, and also missed birdie putts at 15th, 17th and 18th, while dropping a shot on the 16th after pulling his drive.
"I just didn't hole any putts out there at all," he admitted afterwards after carding a one over par final round 73.
"The bogey at 16 cost me, but I played 17 and 18 pretty well but just couldn't hole the putts for birdies."
But he added: "It has been great coming back to Conwy. The weather has been fantastic, the crowds have been great and the course has played really well. Its a great tribute to North Wales to host such a great event."
Record crowds attended the final day making it one of the best attended events in the European Seniors Tour history and the course proved a real test for some of the world's greatest golfers, with only Mitchell and Woosnam finishing under par.
Mitchell finished -3 with a three round total of 213 after a closing round 71, while Woosnam was second on -1 (215) and American Jerry Bruner third on +2 (218) after carding the best round of the final day with a four under par 68.
Sandy Lyle started the day in contention, but fell away on the back nine to finish +5 with a final round 76.
After picking up the £75,000 winner's cheque, Kent-based Mitchell said: “I’ve enjoyed every minute of this week. It’s still not quite sunk in that I’ve won. It was a fantastic golf course to play. It was in great condition and you had to play well around here.

Woosnam hits form to delight Conwy crowd

Posted by Tim Channon on June 14, 2008 4:04 PM

IAN WOOSNAM shrugged off a painful hip to delight his big following with a four under par 68 to leap to the top of the leaderboard on the second day of the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Golf Open at Conwy (June14).
After being one under par after nine holes he put in a storming finish with three birdies in the last five holes of the round to go to -2 for the tournament going into Sunday's final day.
He was later joined at the top of the leaderboard on -2 by England's Peter Mitchell, who birdied the last two holes to follow up his first round 72 with a two-under par 70.
Overnight leader Sandy Lyle struggled on the second day, and after a double bogey on the 15th he finished with a four-over par 76 and goes in to the final day three shots behind the joint leaders on +1 from his overnight position of -3.
England's Jim Rhodes is also on +1 while Scotland's John Chillas is on +2 after matching Woosnman's four-under 68 in his excellent second round, and four players are on +3 including Gordon Brand Jnr and New Zealander David Merriman, with Costantino Rocca one of four players on +4 after a second round 73
Woosnam said: “I played a lot better than I did yesterday. I hit some great drives on the par fives. I’m very happy with that round.
"When you get on a course like this you have to play little punch shots and manoeuvre the ball in the right way and I did that today.
“I was in agony all the way around the course with my left hip going into spasms, but it seems the further I get around the course the better it gets. At the start of the round it was very painful.
“Hopefully I can go out tomorrow and make another score like that and win my first Wales Seniors Open. Sometimes when you are playing in front of your home crowd you just pull that little bit extra out the bag."
John Barnett (Royal St David's) is on +18 after a second round 83.
The leaders tee off at noon in their final round on Sunday.

Lyle heads the leaderboard at Conwy

Posted by Tim Channon on June 13, 2008 3:20 PM

SANDY LYLE set the early pace from a star-studded field in the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open at Conwy on Friday (June 13) with a three-under par 69.
After being +2 after nine holes with bogeys at the 5th and 8th holes, he had a blistering run of three birdies and eagle in the first six holes on the back nine.
That included an eagle three on the par 14th, to put him top of the leaderboard, a shot clear of New Zealander David Merrimen and two clear of Gordon Brand Jnr.
They were the only three players to beat par in the testing windy conditions.
A big gallery followed Ian Woosnam, but he described his round as "a battle" as he finished with a two over par 74.
After being two over par after five holes, he got it back to level, but then had a double bogey 7 at the 12th. He got a birdie back at the par 5 14th, but then dropped another shot at the 17th when he put his second shot into a greenside bunker, and missed a shortish putt for birdie at the 18th.
"As long as I can keep the ball on the fairways and hit the greens then I get still get back in it," he said afterwards.
He said: “I didn’t play particularly well today. It’s quite tricky out there with a lot of cross winds. You’ve got to try to get your ball in the right position and I think two over par was about right really.
“If you make sure you can par the difficult holes then make some birdies on the par fives that’s when you’ve got to do it. Unfortunately on the 12th hole I drove into a bush and made a double bogey and that’s where you don’t want to be dropping shots really
“It was great to see the crowds out there and see some old friends. They are obviously behind me and hopefully I can put a good score together for them tomorrow. You want to do your best for your home crowd but it can be difficult in front of them too. It’s not as good when you are not playing well.
With the wind causing many of the players problems, defending champion Carl Mason struggled to a six-over par 78, despite a birdie on the last.
Constantino Rocca had a 75, Jose Rivero a 79, which included a double bogey 6 at the 18th, while Sam Torrance carded an 80, including a triple bogey 7 at the 4th.
Club professional John Barnett from Royal St David's (Harlech) carded a seven-over par 79 in his first European Seniors Tour round since having a heart by-pass operation two years ago.
He admitted he was nervous during the early stages, hitting five bunkers in his opening six holes, but steadied himself on the back nine.
"Once I got over the initial nerves I played OK," he said.
"My son Andrew was my caddie and he cooled me down. The course is in excellent condition and its like a game of chess out there."
