Llandudno win Coast FA Cup

Posted by Tim Channon on May 10, 2008 6:12 PM

LLANDUDNO lifted the North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup for the first time in 13 years with a 4-1 win over Flint Town United in the final at Conwy.
Two goals from man of the match winner Danny Hughes either side of half-time set them on their way and they dominating much of the second half after that.
Flint started strongly, forcing a number of corners in the opening 20 minutes and Darren Johnson went close with a header that was just wide, while Llandudno keeper Sean Pearson came off his line well to save at the feet of Shaun Beck.
But Llandudno took the lead just before half-time when Gwyn Peters played a free kick from 25 yards low into the box for Hughes to get the touch which diverted it inside the far post.
Llandudno doubled their lead six minutes in to the second half from another Peters free kick, which he chipped in for Hughes to send a looping header over keeper Andy Hughes.
Alun Roberts steered in the third goal on 72 minutes after Darren Jones got to the byline before pulling the ball back, and five minutes later Llandudno got a fourth when they broke from a Flint free kick. Ben Dews headed the ball clear from inside his own area and Lee Thomas took it on before playing in substitute Bryn Jenkins to slide past the keeper.
Flint got a late goal back on 88 minutes when Alun Roberts was red carded for handling the ball on the goal line from a Flint corner and Steve Hughes scored from the penalty spot, but Llandudno were worthy winners in the end.
Llandudno: Pearson, Dews, Eardley, Johnson, Coverley, Hughes, Jones, Peters (Jenkins 77mins), Thomas (Montgomery 783mins), Hamilton (Morgan 60 mins), Roberts.

Colwyn Bay rugby in North Wales final

Posted by Tim Channon on May 5, 2008 5:46 PM

COLWYN BAY rugby will pay Ruthin in the final of the ScottishPower North Wales Cup, after a backs-to-the-wall 13-3 victory over Nant Conwy on bank holiday Monday (May 5).
Nant had almost 90 per cent of the possession, but couldn't take their chances and were continually thwarted by some outstanding Bay defensive play.
Mark Earl forced his way over for an early try for the Bay, following a lineout on the five metre line, and Gareth Wynne's conversion gave them a 7-3 lead at half-time, with Peredur Ellis kicking a penalty for Nant after Sion Roberts had missed two earlier opportunities.
A drop goal by Ashley James and a long range penalty by Gareth Wynne in the opening 10 minutes of the second half extended that lead to 13-3, and Wynne later hit a post with another penalty attempt.
Nant pressed hard in the closing minutes and twice got within inches of the try line but couldn't get the ball over.
"It was a perfect example of how to win a rugby game without the ball," said Colwyn Bay player coach Mark Earl.
"But we've defended very well and taken what chances we got, and are just delighted to be in the final again. Now we want to go on and win it."
Ruthin beat Pwllheli 38-12 in the other semi-final.
