Colwyn Bay back in mix for play-offs, Llandudno win

Posted by Tim Channon on April 5, 2008 6:15 PM |

COLWYN BAY got themselves back in the mix for the Unibond play-offs with a battling 4-3 victory at rivals Goole on Saturday (April 5).
And that could prove a big win on a day when other play-off contenders Sheffield, Nantwich, Grantham and Stocksbridge all lost.
Colwyn Bay now go into Tuesday's home game against Sheffield in eighth place, two points behind Goole with a game in hand, four points behind sixth-placed Belper with two games in hand and seven points behind fourth-placed Grantham with four games in hand in the race for a top six finish.
Colwyn Bay went behind after only two minutes at Goole when Duncan Bray put the home side in front from the dge of the penalty area, but despite playing against a strong wind, they fought back to equalise through Neil Black's volley into the roof of the net from 18 yards and then took a 2-1 half-time lead when Anthony Wright flicked on a John Lawless corner for Quayle to score at the far post.
Goole equalised 10 minutes into the second half through Karl Rose from a corner, but John Lawless latched onto a long clearance from Jamie Speare to outpace the home defence and score Bay's third.
Goole levelled the scores again through substitute Chris Tate, but Lawless broke clear again to score the winner and was unlucky not to complete a hat-trick when his chip over the keeper from 20 yards hit the cross bar.
Colwyn Bay: Speare, Wynne, P Williams, Callaghan, Rowland (Wade 51), R Williams, Fowler, Quayle, Black, Wright, Lawless. Subs not used: Hoolicken and Finley
.

LLANDUDNO extended their lead over their rivals in second place in the Cymru Alliance with a 2-0 home win over Gresford Athletic.
Chris Hogg and Bryn Jenkins got their goals in the first half, while Neil Coverley had a penalty well saved by Gresford keeper Gareth Rowland, who also made a tremendous save to keep out a Grant Montgomery volley.
Llandudno are now four points ahead of rivals Holyhead, who drew 1-1 with fifth-placed Flint, and Bala, who play on Tuesday.
Llandudno: Pearson, Williams, Eardley, Johnson (Hamilton 65), Coverley, Hughes, Jones, Hogg, Jenkins (Montgomery 74), Peters (Evans 85), Dews.

GLAN CONWY missed the chance to go top of the Welsh Alliance when they were held to 2-2 draw at home by Halkyn. Llandudno Junction lost 3-0 at Llanberis and Llanrwst United were beaten 2-1 at home by Nefyn United.
Big surprise in the Barritt Cup saw Bethesda lose 2-1 at Gwynedd Leaguers Barmouth, who will now play Rhydymwyn in the final.
Penmaenmawr and Llandudno Reserves are both through to the quarter finals of the Clwyd League's Presidents Cup after 4-1 and 3-1 wins respectively, while Llandudno Junction Reserves moved into second place in Division Two with a 3-0 home win over Caerwys Res.
More details on these games in Thursday's Weekly News.
