Sports Awards winners

THE winners of the 2007 Weekly News backed Conwy Borough Sports Awards were
announced by Olympic bronze medal swimmer Steve Parry at a spectacular presentation evening at Venue Cymru last night.
Steve Parry was in great form and proved a big hit with the invited audience of around 400.
If you were at the awards we would welcome you comments on the night.
The award winners were:
Senior Sportsman of Year: Adventure racer Chris Near from Dwygyfylchi,
was a member of the first team from Great Britain to win a major
international adventure race in the six-day Saab Solomon Mountain Racing the French
Alps, consisting of mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, rock
climbing and abseiling as well as running. He was also a winner in the
two-day Swiss Mountain Marathon at Interlaken.

Senior Sportswoman of Year: Johara Sykes Davies from Llandudno who is
British Ladies Professional Kite Surfing champion at the first attempt.

Junior Sportsman of Year: Squash player Jordan Davies from Llanrwst is
ranked number 8 in Europe at Under-15 level and is the Welsh Open and
Closed Champion.

Junior Sportswoman of Year: Emily Whitlock from Colwyn Bay helped England
Under-15s squash team win Gold at the European Team Championships and earlier this year moved to Number one in the European Under-13
rankings.

Senior Team of the Year: Llandudno Multi Disability Football Team are UK
champions after completing a league and Cup double in the North West Ability Counts
League and then travelling to London for the national finals and beating
Ipswich Town 4-0, Tottenham Hotspur 8-1, Leicester City 4-0 and Brighton
3-0 in the final.

Junior Team of the Year: Colwyn Bay Under-15s hockey team, North Wales
champions and runners-up in the Welsh Championships where they were the
only mixed team (boys and girls) competing at this level.

Most Improved Sportsperson: Disabled field athlete Rebecca Chin from
Deganwy won gold at the UK School Games with a throw that ranks her sixth
in the world - only a year after taking up throwing events.

Special Achievement Award: Nine-year-old Dylan Davies from Conwy, who has
hemiplegia, swam a mile non-stop in Colwyn Leisure Centre pool in a time
of 2hrs 5mins to raise £500 for charity.

Community Health Challenge Award: Llandudno Amateur Boxing Club, who have
helped promote self discipline, self
respect and physical fitness, as well as developing a team ethos and self
confidence.

Conwy Schools Team Award: Ysgol John Bright girl tag rugby team reached
the national finals at the Millennium Stadium.

Volunteer Coach of the Year: Angie Board from Old Colwyn, swimming coach
with Conwy Whales Disabled Swimming Club.

Services to Sport Award: Howie Roberts of Llandudno who has given 45 years
service to Llandudno Rugby Club and was instrumental in securing lottery
funding of £125,000 to improve facilities at the club.

What a great night. Congratulations to everyone concerned and all the winners whose achievements should make us all in the borough of Conwy very proud. Steve Parry was an excellent guest celebrity speaker and the Conwy youth band provided a a great atmosphere.
Long may these award nights continue.
