ATHENS Olympic swimming bronze medalist Steve Parry is backing Wales' Dave Davies for medal success in next year's Olympic Games in Beijing.
The Liverpudlian, who was also a Silver medalist at the 2202 Commonwealth Games, enthralled the audience of 400 at the 2007 Conwy Sports Awards at Venue Cymru last Friday, and says he is a huge supporter of such events.
"When you stop competing you realise just how important all the people behind the scenes like coaches, advisers and administrators have been and it's very important there are events like this to recognise their hard work as well as the acheivements dedication of athletes.
" I think the Conwy awards night is fantastic and I hope it continues for many years."
And he said he believes Wales could be cheering on Cardiff swimmer Dave Davies to success at next year's Olympics.
"I think he has a great chance of a medal," said Steve.
"He has recenlty moved from Cardiff to build up his preparations for Beijing at Loughborough College, but he is a Welsh boy through and through and will be busting his gut to do Wales proud."
He added that British Swimming was also working very hard to bring through more top class swimming in time for the London Olympics in 2012.
"New swimming pools like the one being built in Llandudno will play a big role in that. With the facilities in place it is up the youngsters to show the determination and to set their goals high enough to make it."
He added: "Great Britain aims to finish in the top four in the medals table in 2012 and I am confident we will achieve that goal."
A full report and pictures of the Cowy Sports Awards appears in this week's Weekly News along with all the reports and results on local football, rugby, golf, hockey, snooker, pool, darts, table tennis, badminton and boxing, and news of another title success for Llanfairfechan racing driver Richard Singleton.
