Speare is cup hero for Bay
Posted by Tim Channon on October 31, 2007 12:58 AM
TWO penalty shoot-out saves by Jamie Speare saw Colwyn Bay progress to the next round of the Unibond President's Cup on Tuesday night.
They were leading 2-1 in normal time through Paul Williams and a John Lawless penalty, but Woodley Sports equalised with an injury-time penalty scored by their keeper Liam Hegginbotham.
With extra time failing to produce a winner, Speare saw the Seagulls through by the saving the first and last of Woddley's five penalties, while Crowder, Williams, Swan and Murt all scored for the Bay.
More details in Thursday's Weekly News.
Mixed fortunes for Colwyn Bay and Llandudno
Posted by Tim Channon on October 27, 2007 8:16 PM
MIXED fortunes for Colwyn Bay and Llandudno today (Saturday, October 27).
Llandudno came from behind to scramble a crucial 2-1 win over Llandyrnog United, and with leaders Prestatyn losing 5-2 at Bala, Llandudno are now seven points behind with two games in hand - with a huge game away to Bala to come next week.
Llandyrnog were the better side for much of the game and led with a Stuart Vernon free kick from just outside the penalty area after 15 minutes.
Llandudno appeals that a Joe Morgan header had crossed the line before being cleared were waved away, but they equalised on the hour when Lee Thomas played the ball back for Neil Coverley to score from 20 yards, and then 15 minutes later Coverley's free kick into the penalty area was touched home by Danny Hughes for the winner.
Llandudno were pinned in their own half for the last 15 minutes in which Llandyrnog forced six corners and Neal Hughes was denied an equaliser by a flying save from Andy Rooney.
Colwyn Bay lead through Neil Black's header from a Martin Crowder cross but ended up losing 2-1 at home to Belper Town.
The result rested on two controversial decisions by the linesmen. Paul Williams believed his header had crossed the line before being cleared, but the linesman refused to give it, and then after Anthony Wilson had score Belper's equaliser, Colwyn defenders were adamant a Jon Hobson header had not crossed the line before being cleared, but this time the linesman signalled a goal with Bay keeper Jamie Speare booked for his angry protest.
The Bay were again without John Lawless, Robbie Williams and James Olsen through injury and Bay boss Gary Finley said: "Having to swap and change the side all the time due to injuries is not helping us, but we are being too naive in a lot of our play.
"We looked very bright for the first 20 minutes, but after giving them a soft equaliser just before half-time we never got going in the second half.
"We have to be more ruthless in front of goal and more determined in defence - and need to get things back on track very quickly."
In the Pentraeth Honda Welsh Alliance Glan Conwy continued their great form with a 4-1 win at Conwy United, while Llandudno Junction and Llanrwst United drew 1-1.

Seagulls beaten at Cammell Laird
Posted by Tim Channon on October 24, 2007 10:30 PM
TWO goals in the last 17 minutes ended Colwyn Bay's hopes of success at Cammell Laird on Wednesday evening with a 2-0 defeat.
The Seagulls did really well for three-quarters of the game, creating the better chances and looking compact and well organised at the back.
Only a brilliant diving save from Paul Whitfield denied James Olsen a goal with a header from a Lewis Callaghan cross inside the first 15 minutes, and Kyle Armstrong had another headed chance from a corner which he put straight at the keeper.
Cammell Laird's best effort was an angled chip over Jamie Speare by Anthony Sheehan which bounced on top of the bar, but generally the Bay keeper had little to do.
Olsen put in some good runs and crosses down the left early on but he had to come off at half-time with a thigh strain. That meant a reshuffle, but with Adam Wade having a good game in the middle, Colwyn Bay still created chances.
Armstrong saw his volley from a Jon Walker corner cleared off the line and Neil Black and Paul Williams (twice) both had chances inside the area but couldn't get their shots on target.
In the end those misses proved costly, when on 73 minutes Lairds subsititute Stuart Wright got the ball on the left edge of the area and curled a great shot into the top corner of the net to put the home side ahead.
Cammell Laird dominated the last 15 minutes after that with Speare making a fine save to deny Alex Hay, but he was beaten again five minutes from the end by a deflected 25 yard shot from another Lairds susbitute Jason Ward.
It was a disappointing end to a game in which the Seagulls had done so well for so long.
Colwyn Bay: Speare, Callaghan, Roberts, Swan, Armstrong, Wade, Williams, Olsen (Boardman 45mins), Black, Murt, Walker (Crowder 80mins). Sub not used: Brandreth.
Colwyn Bay progress in FA Trophy
Posted by Tim Channon on October 20, 2007 6:33 PM
COLWYN BAY are in the hat for the next round of the FA Trophy after a 2-1 win over Newcastle Blue Star at Llanelian Road.
First half goals from defenders Iain Swan and Lewis Callaghan were enough to win the game, although they struggled to impose themselves on the second half and the fans had to endure a nervous finale when Newcastle pulled a goal back in added time and then had an equalising goal disallowed with virtually the last kick of the game.
"It was a workmanlike performance," said manager Gary Finley.
"We got two good goals and were in control at half-time, but every time we got the ball in the second half the referee seemed to award a free kick against us and that disrputed our flow. They had a 6ft 4ins centre forward and we knew they would play to that, but overall I thought we dealt with it well and stayed organised at the back."
The Seagulls lost John Lawless with a groin injury after only 25 minutes but went in front 10 minutes later when Martin Crowder had a shot cleared off the line and the ball came out to Iain Swan who scored with a fierce strike from 30 yards.
Five minutes later Lewis Callaghan scored with a header from a Crowder corner, but Steve Birks was unlucky to hit the Colwyn Bay crossbar just before half-time.
The Newcastle keeper saved well at Neil Black's feet in the second half but that was the only time he was tested, before Newcastle got a goal back with a volleyed strike from full-back Leon Scott in the first minute of added time.
The visitors got the ball in the net again two minutes later, but the referee had already blown for a Bay free kick.
Glan Conwy completed the double over Welsh Alliance leaders Rhyl Reserves with a 2-0 win, while Llandudno Junction drew 0-0 at Halkyn Reserves, but both Conwy United and Llanrwst United are out of the FAW Welsh Trophy - Conwy losing 3-0 at Rhos Aelwyd and Llanrwst going out on penalties against Mid-Wales opponents Berriew.
More details on all these games in this week's Weekly News.
Llandudno out of League Cup
Posted by Tim Channon on October 18, 2007 11:10 AM
LLANDUDNO are out of the Cymru Alliance League Cup after a 2-0 home defeat against Holyhead Hotspur on Wednesday night.
Two goals from Curt Williams, after 23 and 65 minutes, saw the Anglesey side progress to the second round as Llandudno's disappointing home record continued.
Having won five out of five league and cup games away from home, they have won only two out of seven home games, although they lost keeper Sean Pearson through injury in the second half and had to play on with 10 men as all the subs had been used.
Llandudno have been left without a game this weekend following the decison of Bodedern to pull out of the league this week for financial reasons.
That means Llandudno's 4-0 win over Bodedern in August is now null and void, dropping them seven points behind current leaders Prestatyn Town with a game in hand.
There is more on that story in this week's Weekly News, plus news on a possible addition to Colwyn Bay's squad ahead of their FA Trophy home tie against Newcastle Blue Star on Saturday.
There is news of an eagle in the Bayonet Winter Scratch Golf League, plus all the local golf news, a full-round up of local football, rugby, hockey, darts, badminton, table tennis and snooker and the junior sports page features pictures of Llanrwst Under-12s rugby team and Glan Conwy Under-11s football squad plus results and reports on junior football and rugby.
Llandudno hit injury-time winner

LLANDUDNO scored a goal three minutes into added time to snatch three vital points in a 2-1 win at Flint Town United and maintain their challenge at the top of the Cymru Alliance.
After taking the lead on 58 minutes when Lee Thomas latched onto backpass to round the keeper and score, Flint looked to have saved the game on 82 minutes when Llandudno keeper Andy Rooney couldn't hold onto a shot from outside the area and Stuart Hughes was left with a tap in as the ball ran loose.
Llandudno, who had had the better of the second half, played four up front in the closing minutes and won it in added time with a headed goal from substitute Anthony Tierney from a Lee Thomas cross.
Llandudno stay second in the table, but still four points behind Prestatyn Town who also won 2-1 at home to Llandyrnog.
COLWYN BAY put up a much improved performance to gain a point with a 1-1 draw at Nantwich Town in the Unibond League after taking the lead with John Lawless penalty after Neil Black had been fouled.
But they drop a place to eighth in the table and lose further ground on the top four sides who all won.
In the Welsh Alliance Glan Conwy beat Llandudno Junction 5-0, Conwy Uniuted drew 1-1 at Pwlheli and Llanrwst crashed out of the Cookson Cup with a 6-1 defeat at Llanrug.

Injuries hit Llandudno cup bid
Posted by Tim Channon on October 6, 2007 9:34 PM
INJURIES to three key players wrecked Llandudno's hopes of Welsh Cup glory as they lost 2-1 in extra time against NEWI Cefn Druids from the Welsh Premier.
Despite losing Neil Coverley after only 11 minutes with a calf injury, Llandudno took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Leighton Griffiths when Chris Hogg played him in on the right and he curled a shot into the far corner of the net.
They held that lead until the 75th minutes, but they suffered another major blow when they lost their main striker Lee Thomas with an ankle injury and 10 minutes later Cefn Druids equalised through a well-struck volley from substitute Lee Jones.
Llandudno also lost defender Sean Eardley with a hamstring injury but took the game into the second period of extra time before Darren Williams headed Cefn Druid's winner from a Lee Jones cross.
"The injuries had a big influence on the game - particularly when we lost Lee, because he is such an important player for us up front," admitted joint manager Deiniol Graham.
"They changed to three up front and it took us too long to deal with that and we paid the price with the equaliser.
"Even so we had chances to get a second goal and we have to be more clinical in front of goal if we are to compete with teams like this."
CONWY UNITED also put up a brave effort in the Welsh Cup before losing 3-2 away to Mid-Wales League side Twyn Bryncrug.
IT was a dismal day for COLWYN BAY who lost 3-0 at home to Sheffield FC in the Unibond Division South.
The Bay resorted too often to a long ball game against a big physical side and lacked imagination to open up their opponent's defence.
They were 1-0 down at half-time and conceded two goals in the space of three minutes in the second half which finished the game.
IN the Welsh Alliance GLAN CONWY won 2-0 at LLANRWST UNITED and LLANDUDNO JUNCTION beat Pwllheli 2-1.
