Seagulls draw with Wrexham
Posted by Tim Channon on July 21, 2007 11:44 PM
COLWYN BAY maintained their encouraging pre-season form with a 1-1 draw with a young Wrexham side on Saturday, but have suffered a blow with the loss of recent signing Danny Ryan.
The left-side player who lives in Huddersfield has found the travelling too much.
"It took him three and half hours to get home last week and that made up his mind to go. I'm sorry to lose him, but we have a strong squad now," said manager Gary Finley.
The manager was again pleased with the fitness of his side who finished strongly on a wet and slippery surface against Wrexham's full-timers and were only denied victory by a fine save from Llandudno-born keeper Chris Maxwell to turn Darren Wright's shot round the post.
Mark Quayle gave Colwyn Bay a 70th minute lead with a cooly-taken chip over the keeper, but Wrexham, equalised five minutes later through Paul Williams.
The 16-year-old Maxwell, who travels to Northern Ireland with the Wales squad for next week's Milk Cup international youth tournament, made a good save from trialist midfielder John Walker, while Anthony Murt, who again impressed in attack, Quayle, Paul Williams and Colin Roberts all went close for a Bay side who were without four players - John Boardman, Neil Black, Jamie Olsen and Kyle Armstrong - through holidays, injury and illness.
There will be a full report on the game in this week's Weekly News.

Among the players likely to be on show are Northants' South African all rounder Lance Klusener, who won the World Cup man of the tournament award in 1999, and Somerset's Australian batting star Justin Langer, who was Wisden's World Cricketer of the Year in 2001.
We've got three pairs of tickets for all five days to give away in our free to enter competition in this week's paper.

Seagulls sign new striker after 2-2 draw
Posted by Tim Channon on July 14, 2007 9:26 PM
COLWYN BAY gained a very creditable 2-2 draw with Blue Square Conference North side Vauxhall Motors at Llanelian Road which delighted manager Gary Finley.
And one of the major pluses from the match was trialist striker Anthony Murt who was signed up after the game.
A regular scorer with Colne Dynamoes last season, the tall striker did more than enough to impress the manager.
"He looks like he can be a real handful for opposing defences," said Gary afterwards.
Murt was unlucky not get on the schoresheet when he was twice denied by fine saves from Vauxhall keeper Sean Lane, the first from a great turn and volley in the box which the keeper dived to turn round the post.
Of the other new signings, James Olsen showed he has the potential to become the side's main playmaker in midfield, holding the ball well and spraying some nice passes around, while Danny Ryan put in a couple of good runs on the left.
But John Lawless again stood out for me as the best player on the park and Colwyn Bay supporters must hope and pray that his strong friendship with the manager will keep him at Llanelian Road - because there is no doubt he is going to be a key figure if the side is to launch a strong a promotion challenge.
It was also good to see John Boardman's appearance after a spell training at Rhyl and he made a couple of important tackles in the second half.
With the two main central defenders Neil Coverley (calf muscle injury) and Tim Brandreth (away on honeymoon) both missing, Anthony Wright seized on a defensive error to give Vauxhalls an early lead, but Colwyn Bay played well at times and after Lawless (twice) and Murt (twice) had gone close, they equalised seven minutes into the second half when Olsen cut inside to score with a shot that evaded Vauxhall's substitute trialist keeper.
The keeper redeemd himself with a fine save at Neil Black's feet when he was put through by Martin Crowder, and Black shot narrowly over the bar before Colwyn Bay got caught on the break for Andy Johnson to put Vauxhall back in front.
The Seagulls, who dominated much of the second half , finished strongly and equalised when Black and Darren Wright set up the chance for Martin Crowder to get a thoroughly deserved equaliser on 82 minutes.
Former Bay defender Joe McMahon took the eye for Vauxhalls in the first half when he gave Mark Quayle little chance to make an impact, but overall the Seagulls can be pleased with their performance.
"They are two divisions higher than us but I thought we controlled large parts of the game and I was very pleased with our fitness levels because we finished the stronger side," added the manager afterwards.
Colwyn Bay are away to Burscough on Tuesday and then entertain Wrexham next Saturday (July 21).
LLANDUDNO came from 0-2 down to draw 2-2 with Caernarfon Town in their opening pre-season game at Maesdu Park. More details in this week's Weekly News.

Football legends raise cash for hospice
Posted by Tim Channon on July 1, 2007 11:20 PM
FOOTBALL legends Ian Rush, Alan Kennedy and Mickey Thomas were part of the Celebrity team which helped raise over £1,600 for the Ty Gobaith children's hospice on Sunday.
They beat a Daily Post/Weekly News Xl 5-1 at Eirias Park in a game which attracted a crowd of over 400 to the Colwyn arena, despite heavy rain in the hour before the kick off.
Chris Evans put the newspaper side in front early on but after Ian Rush had equalised, ex-Liverpool and Wrexham player Lee Jones scored at the second attempt from the penalty spot after the referee ajudged that a free kick for a foul on Mickey Thomas had struck a hand in the defensive wall.
Henry Caldecott, 16, who plays for Llandudno Under-17s and won the Weekly News readers' competition for a place in the Celebrities line-up, capped his day by scoring a third goal for the celebrities in the second half with a left foot shot, and they added two more goals late in the game through ex-Manchester United and Colwyn Bay striker Deiniol Graham and substitute Danny Griffiths.
Full report and pictures will be in Thursday's Weekly News.
